Surviving 9/11: A Story of Fate, Resilience, and Family

On a fateful morning in September 2001, Sara Botkin, then 24, made a seemingly ordinary decision to buy a signed Mariah Carey CD at the World Trade Center mall before starting her day as a temp at an insurance firm. Little did she know that this choice would ultimately save her life. As she waited for the elevator, news of the North Tower being hit reached her, prompting her to head back to Queens just before the South Tower, where she worked, was struck. This pivotal moment marked a turning point in her life, leading her to eventually move back to Pittsburgh, marry her boyfriend, and start a family.

Now, at 49, Sara is the owner of Botkin Family Wealth Management and a mother of three children. Every September, as the anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11 approaches, she allows herself to reflect on the grief and loss that many Americans experienced that day. Watching footage of the towers falling and listening to the harrowing 9/11 calls serves as a reminder of the lives lost and the impact of that day on countless families across the nation.

Prior to the attacks, Sara was pursuing a career as a professional singer in New York City, taking on various gigs to support herself. Her life took a different trajectory after the events of 9/11 unfolded, reshaping her priorities and relationships. The clear blue skies and her anticipation of the Glitter soundtrack release on that fateful morning were quickly overshadowed by the chaos and devastation that followed the terrorist attacks.

As Sara made her way back home to Queens, the full extent of the tragedy became apparent as she witnessed both towers engulfed in flames. The messages on her answering machine from her worried family highlighted the gravity of the situation, culminating in the realization that her workplace, Aon Corporation, had been directly impacted by the attacks. The days following 9/11 were filled with uncertainty and sorrow, as Sara grappled with the aftermath of the tragedy and the loss of colleagues.

The support and love of her family, particularly her boyfriend Ovi, who later became her husband, provided solace and strength during those challenging times. Their relationship deepened in the wake of the national tragedy, leading to their marriage just a few months later. The resilience and bond that emerged from the shared experience of surviving 9/11 have continued to shape Sara's perspective on life and family.

Despite the lingering sorrow and memories of that tragic day, Sara finds solace in sharing her story of survival with her children, emphasizing the gratitude she feels for being able to build a life beyond the events of 9/11. The CD that she purchased on that fateful morning serves as a poignant reminder of the twists of fate that spared her life and allowed her to embrace the love and joy that followed in the years since.
