Press Freedom Concerns in Hong Kong: The Wall Street Journal Publisher Found Guilty in Union Dispute
A Hong Kong court recently found the publisher of The Wall Street Journal guilty of discouraging one of its reporters from joining a trade union, sparking concerns about press freedom in the city. The court acquitted Dow Jones Publishing Co. (Asia) Inc. of the charge of firing the reporter over the union role. Former WSJ reporter Selina Cheng, who is also the chairperson of the Hong Kong Journalists Association, initiated a private prosecution against Dow Jones Publishing Co. (Asia) Inc. after being dismissed from her position in July 2024.
