Phillips was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit at UI Health Care, where medical professionals discovered severe brain damage caused by the cardiac arrest. His family made a heartfelt post on his Instagram account, informing followers of the decision to remove life support. Phillips was described as a passionate musician who enjoyed playing jazz, choir, and marching band, having spent the summer touring with the drum and bugle corps.
The family's post expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and love for Derek, stating that he was surrounded by family and the music he cherished. Despite the devastating loss, they found solace in knowing that he was comfortable in his final moments.
