Unruly Passenger Restrained with Duct Tape and Zip Ties on American Airlines Flight
A 67-year-old Arizona man named Layne Arthur Lundeen made national news after being restrained with duct tape and zip ties by American Airlines crew and passengers due to his alleged racist and misogynist comments. The incident occurred on a flight from Dallas-Fort Worth to Newark, which had to make an emergency landing in Baltimore. Lundeen was arrested upon landing, and his employer fired him shortly after the incident.
The chaotic situation unfolded about two hours into the flight when Lundeen began shouting obscenities and slurs at a flight attendant. The verbal abuse escalated to physical violence when he allegedly attacked a seatmate and a woman who tried to intervene. Passengers Richard Olenick and Juan Mejia stepped in to restrain Lundeen using zip ties and duct tape to prevent further harm.
Despite the intense struggle, Olenick and Mejia managed to safely subdue Lundeen by using duct tape to secure his chest, arms, hands, and head. The swift action of the passengers and crew helped de-escalate the situation and ensure the safety of everyone on board. Following the incident, Lundeen was fired by his employer, Long Realty, for his actions, which were deemed inconsistent with the company's values.
