Tragic Climbing Incident on Castle Peak: Mountain Rescue Aspen Responds Swiftly
A tragic incident occurred on the north face of Castle Peak, near Aspen, resulting in the death of a climber, as reported by Mountain Rescue Aspen. The Gunnison County Sheriff's Office alerted the agency about the fallen climber, prompting assistance from the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office. Responding swiftly, Mountain Rescue Aspen deployed team members to the upper Montezuma parking lot via OHV, while Fight for Life located the climber from the air and transported additional rescue team members to the site. By 4 p.m., personnel reached the climber and determined the injuries were fatal.
With a total of 21 team members involved in the operation, the climber was carefully evacuated from the mountain using a technical lowering system. The rescue mission concluded at 8:14 a.m. Mountain Rescue Aspen and the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the importance of backcountry travelers being well-prepared, knowledgeable about their route and conditions, and aware of their own capabilities and limitations.
