Residential Volunteer Opportunity at Point Reyes Lighthouse: Immerse Yourself in History and Nature
The National Park Service is seeking a residential volunteer to assist at the historic Point Reyes Lighthouse during the fall and winter months. The volunteer will be responsible for staffing the Lighthouse Visitor Center and giving talks about the area's natural and cultural history. The assignment runs from Nov. 6 to Feb. 1 and requires about 30 hours of volunteer work per week. In exchange for their service, the selected volunteer will receive rent-free housing in an apartment near the visitor center, which includes utilities, internet access, basic furnishings, laundry, and parking. Pets are not allowed, and volunteers must provide their own transportation and groceries.
Constructed in 1870 to warn ships of the dangerous Point Reyes Headlands, the lighthouse served for over a century before being automated by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1975. The historic lighthouse was then transferred to the National Park Service and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. Visitors to the lighthouse today must walk half a mile from the parking lot to the Lighthouse Visitor Center and descend 313 stairs to reach the lighthouse. The stairs may close during high winds or hazardous weather conditions. The Point Reyes area is known for frequent fog and strong winds, making the volunteer assignment challenging yet rewarding.
