Labor Day has its roots in the late 19th century when activists aimed to honor workers. The first U.S. Labor Day celebration occurred in New York City in 1882, with 10,000 workers participating in a parade. It wasn't until 1894 that President Grover Cleveland signed a law designating the first Monday of September as a legal holiday.
On Labor Day, government buildings like offices, post offices, courts, and schools are closed. Banks and the stock market are also closed for the holiday. Despite the closure of some services, millions of Americans are expected to travel during the Labor Day weekend. Flights to popular domestic destinations are more expensive this year, as are hotel prices. Gas prices have also increased compared to last year. However, cruises departing from U.S. ports are slightly cheaper than the previous year.
