Colin Kaepernick: A Decade of Activism and Advocacy

Ten years after his protest against racial injustice gained widespread attention, former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick remains committed to his mission, though his relationship with the league has soured. In an interview with NBC News, Kaepernick revealed that he no longer watches professional football games, citing the NFL's treatment of him and his fellow protesters as the reason. Instead, he now follows college football.

Kaepernick made headlines in 2016 when he and his then-teammate Eric Reid knelt during the national anthem to protest racial inequality and police brutality. This act of protest sparked a global conversation and drew both support and criticism. Despite facing backlash, Kaepernick stood by his decision, emphasizing that his protest was about more than football—it was about addressing systemic issues of oppression and injustice.

Following the 2016 season, Kaepernick found himself without a team and was effectively blackballed from the NFL. He and Reid filed a collusion lawsuit against the league, alleging that they were being kept out of professional football due to their protests. The lawsuit was settled in 2019, but Kaepernick's NFL career came to an abrupt end.

In the years since leaving the NFL, Kaepernick has dedicated himself to social justice initiatives, including the Know Your Rights camps, which empower Black and Brown communities through education and self-empowerment. He has also supported efforts to conduct independent autopsies in cases of police-involved deaths, seeking accountability and justice for victims and their families.

When asked about his football legacy, Kaepernick expressed that he doesn't dwell on it. Instead, he focuses on making a positive impact and working towards a better future for all. His upcoming memoir, "The Perilous Fight," set to be released on September 15, will provide further insight into his journey and the challenges he has faced.

As Kaepernick continues his advocacy work and remains steadfast in his commitment to social justice, his legacy will be shaped by the impact he has on the world around him. Through his actions and words, he hopes to inspire positive change and create a more equitable society for future generations.
