Operation Economic Outcast: US Treasury Secretary Targets Iranian Regime's Assets for Peace Deal Negotiations

The US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, announced plans to economically pressure the Iranian government into agreeing to a peace deal with President Trump. Bessent aims to target offshore bank accounts and luxury properties owned by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in the British Virgin Islands, including expensive houses owned by Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. The Treasury Department's initiative, "Operation Economic Outcast," seeks to isolate Iran through economic measures and a US Navy blockade.

Bessent emphasized the intention to freeze the IRGC's assets and identified their accounts in the British Virgin Islands and luxury properties worldwide. He compared the Iranian government to a decapitated snake, indicating that while the regime may still be active, its power is diminishing. Bessent expressed confidence that the sanctions would either lead to the collapse of the Iranian regime or compel them to return to negotiations.

While the Trump administration has seen success in weakening governments through sanctions, such as in Venezuela, the effectiveness of long-term sanctions in removing dictators, like Saddam Hussein in Iraq and the Castro brothers in Cuba, has been mixed. Bessent's strategy focuses on targeting the financial resources of the Iranian government to bring about a change in their behavior and potentially lead to a peace agreement with the US.
