Convicted Killer Mackenzie Shirilla Denied Appeal by Ohio Supreme Court: Legal Battle Continues
The Ohio Supreme Court has once again denied a motion from Mackenzie Shirilla, a convicted killer, to reopen her case. Shirilla is currently serving a life sentence for the murders of her boyfriend Dominic Russo and their friend Davion Flanagan in 2022. The court's decision on Tuesday marks the end of her state-level appeals.
During the trial in August 2023, prosecutors presented evidence that Shirilla intentionally crashed her car, resulting in the deaths of Russo and Flanagan. She was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 15 years to life by a Cuyahoga County judge. Shirilla's defense team had previously attempted to introduce new evidence suggesting a medical condition caused her to black out before the crash, but the appeal was rejected as untimely.
Despite the rejection of her appeals, Shirilla continues to pursue legal avenues to challenge her conviction. She recently filed a petition in Ohio's Northern District federal court, claiming that her trial and imprisonment violated her constitutional rights. The case is still pending, and Shirilla remains incarcerated at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville.
At 22 years old, Shirilla is expected to have her first parole hearing in September 2037 when she will be 33 years old. The legal battle surrounding her case continues, with the Ohio Supreme Court's latest decision closing the door on her state-level appeals.
