House of Representatives Focuses on Spending Bill and Condemning Socialism in Post-Recess Session
The House of Representatives is back in session after a month-long recess, with Republican leaders focusing on passing a spending bill to fund the government beyond the upcoming midterm elections. They are also planning to vote on a resolution condemning socialism, particularly the rise of the Democratic Socialists of America in the 2026 elections. The Rules Committee will review the resolution on Monday.
GOP leadership aims to vote on the Senate-approved funding bill on Tuesday, with the continuing resolution being the main priority for the House this week. The Senate passed the funding patch earlier in a bipartisan vote of 90-6, funding the government through Dec. 11 and including provisions related to federal grants and hemp-derived products.
House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris has expressed opposition to the provision delaying the ban on hemp-derived products, criticizing the easy access for minors at gas stations. House Speaker Mike Johnson is expected to bring the legislation to the floor under an expedited procedure that requires a two-thirds majority for passage.
The White House has shown interest in delaying the ban on hemp-derived THC products, with Vice President JD Vance lobbying for the provision. The House is also set to vote on denouncing socialism, a move aimed at putting Democrats on record ahead of the November elections.
Progress on a third reconciliation bill is unlikely as the Senate has yet to pass its budgetary framework for the spending bill. The House will continue its legislative agenda as the Senate remains out of town until mid-September.
