Unveiling the Identity of "Claudia": The Story of Lydia Jane Wade McWhorter, a Victim of the Happy Face Killer
In 1992, a woman's body was found near Blythe, California, a victim of the notorious serial killer Keith Hunter Jesperson, also known as the Happy Face Killer. For years, her identity remained unknown, with investigators referring to her as "Claudia." Recently, the Riverside County District Attorney's office revealed that the woman was Lydia Jane Wade McWhorter, thanks to advancements in DNA technology and the collaborative efforts of the regional cold case homicide team.
The cold case team, consisting of members from the Riverside County District Attorney's office, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, and the Riverside Police Department, utilized DNA profiling to identify McWhorter. Despite the challenges posed by the badly decomposed state of her body, the team managed to trace her paternal side to Texas. However, it was a lead from the public that eventually led them to a direct maternal relative of McWhorter, confirming her identity through a DNA sample.
McWhorter's family, who had been searching for her since her disappearance in the '90s, finally have closure after more than 30 years. Her sister, Brenda Burks, provided a DNA sample that confirmed McWhorter's identity, allowing the family to decide on the final arrangements for her remains. McWhorter is one of eight known victims of Jesperson, who was known for drawing happy faces on letters boasting about his crimes. She is the last victim to be identified in connection with Jesperson's murders.
Jesperson confessed to picking up McWhorter while she was hitchhiking along Interstate 15 and later killing her during an argument about money. He then disposed of her body near Blythe. In 2010, Jesperson pleaded guilty to McWhorter's murder and received a sentence of 25 years to life in prison. He has also admitted to killing women in several other states and is currently serving multiple life sentences for his crimes. The identification of McWhorter brings closure to a decades-old mystery and allows her family to finally lay her to rest.
