Embracing Retirement with BTS: A Financial Journey of Passion and Purpose

Retiring at the age of 40 was a significant change for me, but my passion for the global music group BTS has remained constant throughout this transition. By the end of 2026, I will have attended their performances 20 times across three continents. Embracing my fandom may seem unconventional for someone with a financial background, but it has allowed me to envision my retirement lifestyle beyond just financial considerations.

Attending BTS shows provided me with a clear retirement activity, making financial decisions easier. It taught me that financial freedom is not solely about accumulating wealth but also about having the flexibility to use my time as desired. With enough savings to sustain a monthly budget of $6000, my husband and I can comfortably manage our expenses in retirement, a reality I once thought unattainable given my previous debt of $300,000.

When BTS went on hiatus in 2023, I began saving for their reunion tour, creating a dedicated fund for concert-related expenses. This experience prompted me to diversify my retirement portfolio to include more accessible cash accounts alongside investments, aligning my financial strategy with the lifestyle I envisioned. Retirement has challenged me to redefine how I spend my time and prioritize my activities without the structure of a career.

The transition into retirement has been smoother with BTS providing a sense of purpose and structure through trips, meetups, and events to plan. It has taught me to evaluate purchases based on their value and the life they enable rather than just their cost. Moving to Las Vegas in 2025 was a deliberate choice to support our desired lifestyle, offering easy access to entertainment and travel opportunities that align with our interests.

Immersing myself in the BTS fandom has influenced my online presence, inspiring me to share openly about my financial journey and prioritize mental health in the face of criticism. Retiring at 40 was a conscious decision to prioritize enjoyment and experiences while I am physically able, recognizing the cost of waiting to pursue passions. This shift from a goal-oriented identity to valuing rest and relationships has been a transformative aspect of my retirement journey.
