JTF-SB Utilizes AMP-HEL System to Counter Cartel-Linked UAS Threats
Joint Task Force – Southern Border (JTF-SB) recently utilized the Army Multipurpose High Energy Laser (AMP-HEL) system to counter three hostile unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) linked to cartels. The operation, conducted in collaboration with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), successfully defended U.S. military personnel and CBP partners from potential threats. Maj. Gen. Curtis Taylor, commander of JTF-SB, highlighted the importance of integrating advanced directed-energy capabilities to combat the increasing use of drones by cartel networks for illicit activities along the border. The joint efforts of JTF-SB and Mexican Army partners have significantly enhanced border security and disrupted criminal operations in the region. With approximately 8,000 service members deployed under JTF-SB, ongoing operations have reinforced border defenses, conducted patrols, and improved situational awareness to counter illegal activities effectively. The collaboration between JTF-SB and CBP underscores their commitment to safeguarding the border and combating criminal organizations.
