Empire State Building Climbers Face Court Hearing for Daring Engagement Stunt
A couple who made headlines for climbing to the top of the Empire State Building to get engaged is set to appear in court facing criminal charges related to the daring feat. Ivan Kuznetsov, 32, and Angelina Nikolau, 33, from East Orange, New Jersey, are scheduled for a court hearing on Monday. The pair had previously been released under supervision and expressed their willingness to accept the consequences of their actions in a recent Instagram post.
The charges against the couple include reckless endangerment, burglary, and criminal mischief. Prosecutors claim that Kuznetsov and Nikolau accessed restricted areas of the building and climbed over 1,300 feet above Manhattan. They allegedly broke a lock on a security door on the 104th floor to reach the building's broadcasting antenna. It is also believed that the couple entered the building the night before the climb and stayed inside overnight.
Security cameras reportedly captured the couple moving through a hatch on the 102nd floor around 5 a.m. Responding officers had to navigate risky conditions to safely bring them down. Defense attorney Jason Krinsky has argued that the charges are excessive, stating that the stunt did not endanger anyone in the building. Kuznetsov and Nikolau, known for their online presence in scaling skyscrapers worldwide, have described the climb as a romantic gesture.
