Growing up in the rural community of York Town, Clarendon, Rihanna Barrett learned the value of determination and hard work from her mother, a dedicated farmer. These early experiences instilled in her the importance of perseverance, discipline, and faith in God. Now a second-year student at The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Mona, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Banking and Finance, Barrett is grateful for the JWN Foundation Scholarship that has lightened the financial burden on her family and motivated her to strive for excellence.
Reflecting on her upbringing in York Town, Barrett credits her mother and the supportive community for shaping her ambitions and outlook on life. Inspired by her mother's sacrifices as a single parent and farmer, Barrett became the first person in her immediate family to attend university, a milestone she cherishes for the opportunities it represents.
Barrett's academic journey has been marked by consistency, leadership, and a commitment to embracing new opportunities. At Central High School, she excelled academically, founded the Business Club, led various clubs and organizations, and received multiple awards for her achievements. Despite facing financial challenges, Barrett remained focused on her goals, trusted in God, applied for scholarships, and seized every opportunity available to her.
With plans to complete a double major in banking and finance and economics, Barrett aims to broaden her knowledge and prepare for a career in the financial sector. Her interest in finance stems from a desire to understand how financial decisions impact individuals, businesses, and the economy, with a focus on financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and economic development.
Outside the classroom, Barrett is gaining professional experience through an internship and remains actively involved in community service and leadership activities. Applying for the JWN Foundation Scholarship was a strategic move to alleviate the financial strain on her family and continue her education with a focus on personal and professional development.
Looking ahead, Barrett envisions a successful career in Jamaica's financial sector, coupled with entrepreneurship endeavors that promote financial literacy, create employment opportunities, and contribute to national development.
