Enhancing Security at the 146th US Open: NYPD's Proactive Drone Mitigation Program

The NYPD is taking a proactive approach to unauthorized drones flying over the US Open by independently neutralizing them. This initiative, announced by Commissioner Jessica Tisch, is the first time a state or local agency is utilizing new federal authority for drone mitigation operations. The 146th US Open is set to begin with Fan Week this Sunday, leading up to the main draw starting on August 30 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens.

The authority for the NYPD's independent drone program stems from the Safer Skies Act passed by Congress last year, with the official rule coming into effect on July 1. Previously, the NYPD's counter-drone team collaborated with federal partners for drone mitigation efforts, as seen during the World Cup earlier this summer. Now, trained NYPD personnel will have the authority to handle drone incidents at the US Open.

Despite no specific credible threats to the tournament, the NYPD has implemented various security measures. A dedicated team of officers, including the bomb squad, aviation and mounted units, emergency service officers, explosive-detection dogs, heavy weapons teams, and plainclothes personnel, will be present. Concrete barriers will secure the perimeter, and over 100 light towers will illuminate the complex.

With an expected attendance of 1.2 million fans at the US Open, attendees will undergo a screening process before entering the events. A list of prohibited items is available on the US Open website to ensure a safe environment for all visitors. To facilitate transportation, visitors are encouraged to use public transportation, with increased police presence along the 7 line and additional trains provided by MTA and LIRR for convenient travel to and from the event.

In conclusion, the NYPD's independent drone mitigation program at the US Open demonstrates a proactive approach to ensuring the safety and security of the tournament. With a comprehensive security plan in place and collaboration with various agencies, attendees can enjoy the event with peace of mind.
