Rep. Harriet Hageman Secures Republican Primary Victory for Wyoming Senate Seat
Rep. Harriet Hageman has secured the Republican primary victory for the open Senate seat in Wyoming, positioning herself for the upcoming general election in the deeply conservative state. With the backing of former President Donald Trump, Hageman emerged victorious over four Republican rivals, receiving Trump's full endorsement on Truth Social following her candidacy announcement in December.
Having previously unseated Rep. Liz Cheney in the 2022 House race with Trump's support, Hageman garnered further endorsement from the former president for her Senate bid. Trump's vocal support for Hageman stemmed from Cheney's opposition to him, including her vote to impeach him in 2021 and subsequent involvement in the House committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot.
In a competitive primary field that included former Kirby Mayor Sam Mead, who partially self-funded his campaign, Hageman emerged as the frontrunner. Notably, Sam Mead's uncle, Matt Mead, served as governor of Wyoming from 2011 to 2019. Following her primary defeat, Cheney conceded graciously at an event held at the Mead family ranch, with Sam Mead expressing pride in her commitment to truth and integrity.
The Wyoming Senate seat became available after Sen. Cynthia Lummis, a Republican, announced her decision not to seek re-election in December. Lummis cited personal reasons for her choice, stating that she did not feel capable of committing to another six-year term. Wyoming, historically a Republican stronghold, has not elected a Democratic senator since 1962, with Trump securing over 71% of the vote in the state in 2024.
Hageman, a former attorney, transitioned to a political career and currently serves as Wyoming's sole House representative, holding positions on the Judiciary and Natural Resources committees. Her resounding re-election victory in 2024, where she secured 71% of the vote, underscores her popularity and support among Wyoming voters. With her primary win, Hageman now sets her sights on the general election, aiming to continue delivering for the people of Wyoming in the United States Senate.
