Operation Blue Skies: AI-Powered Contrail Mitigation in Aviation
When you gaze at the sky and notice the white streaks left by airplanes, those are contrails, which are clouds formed by water vapor condensing around soot particles in jet exhaust. Despite their innocent appearance, these contrails contribute significantly to aviation's overall climate impact. In an effort to address this issue, we have collaborated with various industry partners to explore ways in which AI can help reduce contrail warming. By utilizing AI-powered forecasts, flight crews and air traffic controllers can make targeted adjustments to avoid contrail-sensitive areas while maintaining normal flight operations.
Building on our initial research, we are now embarking on a new initiative called Operation Blue Skies, which aims to coordinate contrail mitigation across an entire flight corridor. This groundbreaking project will take place in the eastern half of the North Atlantic corridor, specifically in the Shanwick airspace, where approximately 5% of global contrail warming occurs. Operation Blue Skies will consist of two operational trials, each lasting around four months, and will involve diverting a small percentage of flights away from contrail-sensitive regions to prevent the formation of warming contrails.
The success of Operation Blue Skies hinges on close collaboration between various stakeholders in the aviation industry, including scientists, technologists, and air traffic management experts. This initiative is made possible through the support of a UK consortium, co-funded by industry partners and the Department for Transport, with Google UK contributing expertise in AI research and technology on a pro-bono basis. By demonstrating the feasibility of avoiding contrails on an airspace scale, Operation Blue Skies aims to provide a roadmap for significantly reducing aviation's climate impact.
