Zohran Mamdani's Rising Popularity in New York City: Insights from the Siena University Poll

Zohran Mamdani's popularity in New York City is on the rise, according to a recent Siena University poll. The poll, conducted earlier this month, gathered opinions from hundreds of likely New York voters about the mayor, with many residents viewing him favorably. Mamdani, who assumed office in January, has seen a steady increase in favorability among voters.

The Siena poll, released on August 12, surveyed 811 likely New York voters to gauge their opinions on various politicians in the state, including Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mamdani. In New York City, Mamdani received a high favorability rating, with 69% of those polled viewing him favorably, while 24% viewed him unfavorably. Approximately 8% either did not know or did not have an opinion on the mayor.

In contrast, Mamdani's favorability numbers for the entire state of New York were different. About 47% of respondents viewed him favorably, while 44% viewed him unfavorably. In Upstate New York, his favorability rating was 41-46%. Mamdani is currently on vacation with his family at an undisclosed location upstate.

For the first time, Siena also asked respondents about their views on the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), of which Mamdani is a member. Statewide, the majority of respondents viewed the organization unfavorably, with a rating of 30-47%. In New York City, however, DSA had a more favorable rating of 49-32%. Approximately 20% of respondents in the city were undecided about their opinion on the organization.

Overall, Mamdani's favorability in New York City remains strong, with a majority of residents viewing him in a positive light. The Siena poll reflects the growing support for the mayor among voters in the city, highlighting his increasing popularity and favorable image among New Yorkers.
