Parent's Lawsuit Against Portland Public Schools Over Gender Identity Lessons and Pride Flag Display
A mother has filed a lawsuit against Portland Public Schools and two school officials, claiming she was banned from her children's elementary school after objecting to the display of an "Intersex-Inclusive" pride flag and gender identity lessons. The lawsuit was filed by the Liberty Justice Center on behalf of Allison Roberts, who has two children attending Meriwether Lewis Elementary School. The dispute began over benches at the school that were painted with the Intersex-Inclusive pride flag, which Roberts found to be in conflict with her Christian faith.
Roberts also raised concerns about a classroom assignment that asked students to identify and discuss their gender identity. The assignment, called "identity flower," required students to fill out petals with information about their identity, including gender. Roberts was not given the option to opt her child out of the assignment and subsequently met with school officials to address her concerns. During the meeting, she learned about other lessons at the school related to gender identity and expression, which she viewed as promoting "trans" ideology.
Following the meeting, Roberts distributed letters outside the school campus expressing her objections to the gender identity lessons. This led to a confrontation with another parent, resulting in Roberts being served with a one-year trespass order by the police, preventing her from attending her child's elementary school graduation. The lawsuit alleges that the school district violated Roberts' constitutional rights by retaliating against her for speaking out.
Portland Public Schools' Transgender, Nonbinary, and Gender Expansive Policy aims to create a safe and inclusive environment for all students and staff, free of discrimination. The policy emphasizes the importance of understanding and respecting sexual and gender diversity. Roberts is seeking attorney's fees and the removal of the trespass order as part of the lawsuit.
