Mariah Carey's Vocal Showcase: The Story Behind 'Emotions

Mariah Carey's hit song "Emotions" was recorded for her second studio album of the same name. The track showcases Carey's impressive vocal range, spanning five octaves and five semitones, and features arpeggios and whistle tones. Known for its difficulty, "Emotions" was ranked as the number one most challenging song to sing on Spotify's "Top 100 Most Difficult Songs to Sing" list.

Upon its release on August 31st, 1991, "Emotions" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 35, eventually reaching the number one spot and staying there for three weeks. The song remained in the top 40 for 20 consecutive weeks and was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America in 2019. Carey first performed "Emotions" live at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1991 and included it in several of her subsequent tours.

Despite its critical acclaim, "Emotions" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Vocal Pop Performance by a Female in 1992 but ultimately lost to Bonnie Raitt's "Something to Talk About."
