In response to allegations of forced labor, the Trump administration imposed tariffs on 60 nations, including Colombia, under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. These tariffs replaced previous levies enacted under Section 122, which had expired earlier in the year.
President Trump's endorsement of De la Espriella during his presidential campaign marked a shift from the previous administration led by Gustavo Petro, who had strained relations with the White House. De la Espriella has since joined the Shield of the Americas, an anti-cartel alliance led by Mr. Trump, aimed at combating transnational criminal activities in Latin America.
