Security Incident at Central Synagogue: Man Arrested for Assault During Shabbat Service
A disturbance occurred at Central Synagogue in New York, leading to the arrest of a 46-year-old man who allegedly assaulted a member of the congregation. The man was removed from the synagogue by security after causing a disruption during the service. While being escorted out, he physically attacked a 63-year-old woman and also assaulted a 65-year-old security guard by headbutting and spitting at him. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch addressed the incident on social media, mentioning that the disruption took place during Shabbat services and commending the swift action of an NYPD sergeant who apprehended the individual. The rabbi of the synagogue was also contacted by Tisch to discuss the situation. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, and the NYPD has increased its presence at the synagogue. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani also commented on the incident, expressing concern about the situation. The identity of the individual taken into custody has not been disclosed at this time.
