Rescue Mission: 61 Cats Saved from Abandoned Boat in Tacoma
A cat was recently rescued from an abandoned boat near Owen Beach in Tacoma, adding to the total of 61 cats now in the care of the Humane Society of Tacoma and Pierce County. The boat's layout made it challenging to rescue the cats, leading to multiple rescue missions over several days. Police and animal control believe they have accounted for all the cats but will continue to monitor the area just in case.
Approximately 24 of the rescued cats have been placed in foster homes. The cats are reported to be in relatively good health, which is a positive outcome for the Humane Society's team. The cats will remain under the care of the humane society or in foster homes until the investigation is completed. The organization already had over 70 adoptable cats before the influx of 60 cats from the abandoned boat.
The Humane Society of Tacoma and Pierce County is now facing a significant increase in the number of animals in their care and is seeking assistance from the public. They are encouraging people to foster or adopt animals if possible. Foster parents will receive necessary supplies and food from the shelter to support the animals in their care. As of August 12, no formal charges had been filed in relation to the abandoned boat and the cats found on it.
Animal control will assess the overall circumstances surrounding the abandoned boat, considering factors such as the boat's condition, the summer heat, and the cats' health reports from when they were brought to the Humane Society. Based on this information, they will work with the prosecutor's office to determine appropriate charges.
