Matt Hasselbeck, a former NFL quarterback, recently underwent brain scans and tests at Boston University to assess the impact of his football career on his brain health. The hope is to diagnose chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in living individuals, a degenerative brain disease linked to head trauma. CTE has been diagnosed in over 100 former NFL players, raising concerns about the long-term effects of concussions in contact sports.

CTE can lead to memory loss, depression, and behavioral issues, affecting regions of the brain involved in regulating emotions. Currently, CTE can only be diagnosed posthumously, making it challenging to identify and treat in living individuals. Researchers are conducting studies to differentiate CTE from other brain diseases like Alzheimer's and develop specific diagnostic markers for CTE.

The study at Boston University aims to recruit participants who played football at the professional or college level and individuals with Alzheimer's disease who have no history of head trauma. By comparing the similarities and differences between Alzheimer's and CTE, researchers hope to advance the understanding and diagnosis of CTE. The study involves various tests, including mental assessments, brain scans, and blood samples, to evaluate brain function and potential signs of CTE.

Participants like Matt Hasselbeck and Bryan Savage, a former college linebacker, are contributing to the research by volunteering for brain scans and tests. Savage, who has experienced depression and ADHD, hopes to understand if his symptoms are related to brain trauma from playing football.
