2027 Social Security COLA Projection: Impact on Seniors' Cost of Living

The projected cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security recipients in 2027 may be lower than previously estimated, as inflation has eased in the U.S. for the past two months. The Senior Citizens League and AARP, advocacy groups for older Americans, have revised their forecasts based on the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures. The Senior Citizens League now projects a 3.6% COLA, down from the earlier estimate of 3.8%, while AARP forecasts a 3.5% increase, slightly lower than its initial prediction of 3.6%.

Despite the slight decrease in the projected COLA, a 3.5% to 3.6% increase would still be the largest annual adjustment in Social Security payments since 2023. The average retired worker currently receives $2,071 per month in Social Security benefits, and a 3.6% COLA would raise this amount by approximately $75 to around $2,146 per month at the beginning of 2027.

The official COLA for 2027 will be announced by the Social Security Administration on October 14, after the release of the September CPI report. The adjustment will be based on inflation data from July, August, and September. The purpose of the COLA is to ensure that Social Security benefits keep pace with rising prices, but many seniors feel that the adjustment is insufficient to cover their increasing expenses.

Seniors often feel the impact of inflation on their daily expenses, such as groceries, housing, healthcare, and insurance premiums, before the COLA takes effect. The Senior Citizens League Executive Director Shannon Benton expressed frustration on behalf of seniors, stating that waiting for the COLA to catch up with rising prices can be challenging. A survey conducted by the Senior Citizens League in June found that 89% of seniors felt that the 2026 COLA of 2.8% did not adequately cover their cost-of-living increases.

In conclusion, the projected COLA for Social Security recipients in 2027 may be lower than previously estimated, reflecting the recent easing of inflation. While the exact adjustment will be determined in October, seniors are concerned about the adequacy of the COLA in keeping up with their rising expenses.
