Madison Police Shooting Incident: Officer Identified, Investigation Ongoing
The Wisconsin Department of Justice has identified the Madison Police Department officer involved in the shooting incident on July 22 as Kiel Baitinger-Peterson. Officer Baitinger-Peterson, with over 10 years of law enforcement experience, was one of four officers who responded to a report of a burglary attempt in the Marquette neighborhood. The officers encountered Corey Ruiz, who allegedly pulled out a knife during a struggle, resulting in Baitinger-Peterson shooting Ruiz. Despite efforts to save his life, Ruiz passed away at the hospital. All four officers involved are currently on administrative leave as the investigation continues.
The incident, which led to protests and calls for action, unfolded when officers attempted to speak with Ruiz, who then fled on a bicycle. The confrontation escalated at the intersection of S. Baldwin and Williamson Street, where the struggle ensued. Despite attempts to use a taser on Ruiz, it was ineffective, leading to the fatal shooting by Baitinger-Peterson. The presence of a knife at the scene was confirmed by authorities.
Following the shooting, a memorial and encampment were set up at the intersection, prompting City of Madison employees to clear the area on August 4. The reopening of the street marked a significant development in the aftermath of the incident.
