Breaking Barriers: Andy Green's Quest for a Land Speed Record in a Hydrogen-Powered Car
A groundbreaking event is set to take place at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah as British driver Andy Green aims to break the land speed record for a hydrogen-powered car. Green, a retired Royal Air Force fighter pilot, previously set the record for a diesel-powered car two decades ago. Now, he will be driving the JCB Hydromax, a hydrogen-powered vehicle with two internal combustion engines generating a combined 1,600 horsepower.
The JCB Hydromax, a bright yellow, pencil-shaped car, is equipped with hydrogen engines that mix pressurized hydrogen gas with air to create bursts of power. Green's goal is not only to surpass his previous record but also to set new records for hydrogen internal combustion engines and electric vehicles. In practice runs, Green has already reached a top speed of 368.347 mph, but the official record attempt will take place in front of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile.
Green's racing career began with supersonic speeds in jet-powered vehicles, where he set the outright land speed record by traveling faster than the speed of sound. Now, at 64 years old, he has come out of retirement to showcase the potential of hydrogen as a clean-energy alternative.
