Former Merck executive Roger Perlmutter and his wife Joan Kreiss are among the neighbors accused of targeting Maxwell Social Club with complaints to the city and the co-op board. The club claims that the co-op board, where Perlmutter is a member, has been uncooperative in approving repair requests, creating a challenging situation for the club. Kreiss allegedly pushed for the club to host only quiet events, suggesting meditation sessions as an alternative.
Despite Maxwell Social Club's initial promise of being a quiet and intimate venue, neighbors have described it as a noisy and disruptive establishment. The co-op board has filed a lawsuit seeking damages of at least $1.5 million, alleging that the club's activities have disturbed the neighborhood.
