Controversy Surrounding Judge Gail Ray: Son's Criminal History and Legal Implications
The judge overseeing the cases involving the gang-rape of LSU student Madison Brooks has a son who is a convicted sexual predator. One of the accused, Desmond Carter, is set to go on trial on August 17 under Judge Gail Ray's supervision. Brooks, a 19-year-old LSU student, was allegedly gang-raped and later killed by a car after a night out in 2023.
Judge Ray's son, Nelson Taylor, was convicted of forcible rape in 1997 and is currently seeking to overturn those convictions. This has caused a conflict between the district attorney's office and the 19th Judicial District Court due to the judge's involvement.
All judges in the 19th Judicial District Court recused themselves from the case in December 2025. Taylor's attorney filed a motion to overturn the convictions in November 2025, but conflicts of interest delayed the hearing until late July.
District Attorney Hillar Moore filed a motion to recuse Judge Ray from presiding over the case of Casen Carver, who faces charges of video voyeurism, first-degree rape, and third-degree rape. The prosecution argued that Ray's previous exposure to evidence and rulings could affect her impartiality in the case.
Despite the prosecutor's efforts, the Louisiana Supreme Court allowed Judge Ray to continue presiding over Carver's case. The decision was based on the standard of bias or personal interest that would prevent a fair and impartial judgment.
The text messages between Carver and his father, where Carver claimed the judge was on their side, were not sufficient to warrant a recusal. Former Louisiana prosecutor Franz Borghardt explained that friendship with a judge does not guarantee favorable rulings.
