California's MyFirstEV Program: Instant Rebates for First-Time Electric Vehicle Buyers
California Governor Gavin Newsom recently unveiled a new program that offers instant rebates of up to $3,500 for first-time electric vehicle buyers in the state. This initiative aims to counter President Trump's support for fossil fuels and rollback of federal electric vehicle incentives. Participating automakers like Hyundai, Lucid, and Tesla are already providing rebates through the MyFirstEV program, with more manufacturers expected to join soon.
The program offers rebates of $3,500 for new zero-emission vehicles priced up to $50,000 and $1,750 for used vehicles costing up to $25,000. Eligible Californians purchasing their first electric vehicle can benefit from this incentive. The state is investing $135.5 million in the program, with automakers matching the amount to provide a total of $271 million in combined incentives.
Governor Newsom emphasized that California is leading the way in promoting a clean energy future and economic security that is not dependent on foreign conflicts or fossil fuels. The state's renewable power grid has seen significant growth, with battery storage capacity reaching 21,112 megawatts, a substantial increase from when Newsom took office in 2019.
