Preventing Cancer: Dr. Stacy Norton's Personal Journey with Lynch Syndrome
Dr. Stacy Norton, a Houston doctor, has a personal history of cancer in her family, with several relatives being diagnosed with aggressive tumors at young ages. Her mother's death from colon cancer at the age of 7 prompted Norton to participate in a trial vaccine study to potentially protect herself and her children from cancer. Norton is one of approximately 1 million Americans with Lynch syndrome, a genetic mutation that significantly increases the risk of colorectal cancer and other types of cancer. Individuals with Lynch syndrome are advised to undergo frequent colonoscopies to detect and remove precancerous polyps.
