According to police reports, Vasey grabbed the young girl's arm while her mother tried to prevent him from taking the child. The struggle escalated, with the girl being lifted off the ground before her family and bystanders intervened, ultimately leading to the suspect releasing the girl.

Fortunately, the girl did not sustain serious injuries during the incident. Paramedics assessed her at the scene for minor scratches, but she did not require transportation to a hospital. The victim and her family, who are tourists visiting Portland from out of state, cooperated with the authorities in providing information about the attempted kidnapping.
