Free Willy Reimagined: A New Generation's Journey to Freedom

A new generation will soon experience the heartwarming tale of Free Willy as Warner Bros. and AGBO team up to bring a reimagined version of the 1993 adventure film to the big screen. The screenplay for the new Free Willy movie will be penned by Mary-Margaret Kunze and Jade Halley Bartlett. The original movie follows a troubled preteen who forms a bond with an aging orca and sets out to free it from captivity in a local aquarium.

The beloved 90s classic Free Willy spawned a successful franchise with multiple theatrical and home video releases. AGBO, led by Angela Russo-Otstot, Michael Disco, and Kassee Whiting, will produce the new film, with Anthony and Joe Russo serving as executive producers. The AGBO slate also includes projects like a John Rambo movie starring Noah Centineo and the third Extraction film.

Lauren Shuler Donner and Courtney Baker will co-produce the new Free Willy adaptation, with Jesse Ehrman and Cate Adams overseeing the project for Warner Bros. Mary-Margaret Kunze, known for her work at Marvel Television, and Jade Halley Bartlett, who made her feature debut with the Lionsgate movie Miller’s Girl, will bring their creative talents to the screenplay.
