Diageo Closes Aviation American Gin Distillery in Portland: A Strategic Move for Brand Growth

Diageo, a global liquor company, recently closed the Aviation American Gin Distillery and Visitor Center in Northwest Portland. The decision was made to support the growth ambitions of the Aviation American Gin brand, which Diageo acquired in 2020. The distillery and visitor center, located at 2075 NW Wilson St., opened in 2022, offering a cocktail bar, tasting room, gift shop, and tours of the distillation and bottling process.

The Portland-founded gin brand, originally established by House Spirits Distillery in the early 2000s, gained attention when Emmy Award-winning actor Ryan Reynolds became a co-owner in 2018. Diageo's acquisition of Aviation and Davos Brands included a significant financial commitment, with the potential for up to $610 million based on Aviation's performance over the next decade.

Following the closure of the Aviation American Gin facility in Portland, only one Diageo employee and four Visitor Center employees were affected. Diageo had already started transitioning production to other locations in North America to enhance resilience and efficiency. The company owns a variety of well-known brands in the region, such as Captain Morgan, Crown Royal, and Smirnoff.

In conclusion, the closure of the Aviation American Gin Distillery and Visitor Center in Portland marks a strategic decision by Diageo to support the brand's growth and streamline operations. Despite the closure, Diageo remains committed to Aviation American Gin and its portfolio of spirits brands in North America.
