Michael Alfonso: A Young Republican Candidate's Bid for Congress in Rural Wisconsin
Michael Alfonso, a 26-year-old Republican candidate for Congress in rural northern Wisconsin, is drawing attention for his youth and lack of political experience. He is the son-in-law of U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and has received support from his father-in-law, who has campaigned and raised funds for him. Alfonso has also been endorsed by President Donald Trump, but some critics question his qualifications for the job, citing his age and lack of experience.
Alfonso, who graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2022, has emphasized his energy and values, despite his young age. He has participated in a reality show with Duffy and has worked on a podcast hosted by Trump supporter Dan Bongino. Alfonso has framed his candidacy as a response to conservative activist Charlie Kirk's assassination, describing it as a "spiritual battle for the soul of our nation."
In the upcoming primary on August 11, Alfonso will face off against Kevin Hermening, a former Marine and former Iranian hostage, who has deep ties to the district. Hermening has served on a local school board and was chairman of the Marathon County Republican Party for 24 years. Other candidates in the primary include Ashley Furniture executive Jessi Ebben, dog musher Niina Baum, and accountant Don Raihala.
Despite endorsements from House Speaker Mike Johnson and several Wisconsin Republican congressmen, Alfonso has faced opposition from local Republican officials who question his readiness for the job. Some have criticized Duffy's involvement in supporting his son-in-law's campaign, accusing him of using his connections to influence the election. Alfonso has also received donations from transportation interests, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest.
Alfonso is banking on Trump's endorsement to boost his chances in the primary, emphasizing the president's support on his campaign signs. With a divided field of candidates and powerful Republican megadonors backing different contenders, the outcome of the primary remains uncertain. The race will test whether Alfonso's youth and connections can overcome the skepticism of some within the Republican Party.
