Honoring Sydney Watson: Funeral Service and Celebration of Life

A funeral service has been scheduled for Sydney Watson, a 27-year-old wildland firefighter from Alabama who tragically lost her life while battling a wildfire in Colorado. Sydney was part of the U.S. Wildland Fire Service's Rifle Helitack crew and was one of three firefighters who perished during a burnover incident while fighting the Knowles Fire near the Colorado-Utah border. The service will take place on Tuesday, July 7, at Highpoint Community Church in Empire, Alabama. Friends and family can pay their respects from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by a celebration of life service at 6 p.m. Fire departments from the region will honor Sydney with an apparatus detail before the service, and memorial donations can be made to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation or the National Park Foundation in her memory.

Sydney Watson, along with two other firefighters, tragically lost their lives while responding to the Knowles Fire on June 27. The fatal burnover incident occurred during initial attack operations, resulting in the deaths of Sydney, Emily Barker from Michigan, and Nick Hutcherson from Arizona. The Knowles Fire later merged with other fires to form the larger Snyder Fire along the Colorado-Utah border. A serious accident investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances that led to the tragic event.

U.S. Wildland Fire Service Chief Brian Fennessy praised Sydney and her fellow firefighters for their courage, professionalism, and selflessness in the line of duty. They made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting others, embodying the values of the wildland fire service. The community is invited to pay their respects at the upcoming funeral service and honor Sydney's memory by supporting the organizations she cared about.
