Commemorating the Declaration of Independence: USPS Unveils 250th Anniversary Stamp

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has introduced a new commemorative stamp to honor the Declaration of Independence in celebration of the U.S.’s 250th anniversary. The Declaration of Independence Forever stamp showcases a vertical design in red, white, and blue against a deep navy background. The central focus of the stamp is the year “1776,” creatively depicted using white feather quill pens, symbolizing the writing instruments used during the drafting and signing of the historic document.
Unlike previous stamps commemorating the nation’s birthday, this design takes a more minimalist approach by not featuring the document itself, Founding Fathers, or significant landmarks. The stamp was designed by typographer Juan Carlos Pagan under the art direction of USPS designer Greg Breeding. Lucy Trout, secretary to the Postal Service’s Board of Governors, emphasized the enduring significance of the Declaration of Independence as a guiding mission statement for the nation, inspiring generations of Americans to uphold its promises.
The first-day-of-issue ceremony for the stamp took place at the B. Free Franklin Post Office in Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park. The event coincided with the burial and sealing of the “America’s Time Capsule,” containing contributions from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and five U.S. territories, to be preserved for the next 250 years. This stamp release is part of USPS’s broader commemoration of the nation’s semiquincentennial anniversary, highlighting not only the country’s founding but also the early history of the postal service, with Benjamin Franklin serving as the first postmaster general of the United Colonies in 1775.
In addition to the stamp release, the Trump administration has introduced other initiatives to mark America’s 250th birthday, such as a commemorative Social Security card for babies born between July 2 and Dec. 31, 2026, and a limited-edition “Patriot Passport” featuring President Trump’s image. The USPS stamp honoring the Declaration of Independence serves as a poignant tribute to the enduring legacy of the nation’s founding principles and the ongoing commitment to fulfilling its promises for all Americans.
