Journalist Targeted in London Knife Attack: Two Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison
Two individuals have been sentenced to a total of 20 years in prison for a targeted knife attack on a journalist in London, which a judge determined was orchestrated on behalf of the Iranian state. Pouria Zeraati, a journalist for Iran International, was stabbed three times outside his Wimbledon home on March 29, 2024. The attackers, Nandito Badea and George Stana, both Romanian nationals, were found guilty of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, despite their denials.
During the sentencing at the Old Bailey, Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb handed Stana a 12-year prison term, emphasizing that he should have known the attack was on behalf of Iran. Badea, who played a shorter role in the conspiracy, received an eight-year sentence. The judge stated that the attack was carried out for the benefit of a foreign power and highlighted Mr. Zeraati's history as a critic of the regime, which had led to threats against him and his family.
The incident was described as a planned attack with prior reconnaissance, ordered by a third party acting on behalf of the Iranian state. Badea and another individual crowded Mr. Zeraati, with one of them stabbing him multiple times in the thigh, while Stana waited in a getaway car. The attack left Mr. Zeraati scared and anxious, prompting him to relocate abroad out of fear of reprisals.
The prosecution revealed that Badea and his accomplice had visited the property multiple times before the attack, indicating a premeditated plan that had been in the works for over a year. The court was informed that Iran International, the broadcaster Mr. Zeraati worked for, is critical of the Iranian regime and has been designated a terrorist organization by the state.
Despite arguments from the defense that the attackers may not have been fully aware of the implications of their actions, the judge concluded that oppressive regimes seek to suppress opposition and cannot tolerate the scrutiny provided by fearless journalists. Counter Terrorism Police disclosed that they have thwarted 20 plots in the UK linked to Iran since 2022.
