Trump Administration Lifts Ban on Anthropic's AI Models: Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 Now Available with Restrictions
The recent ban on Anthropic's AI models, Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, has been lifted by the Trump administration after concerns about cybersecurity. Anthropic announced that Claude Fable 5 is now available to all users, while access to Mythos 5 is limited to approved U.S.-based organizations. The ban was imposed by the Commerce Department following cybersecurity concerns raised by Amazon researchers, who discovered a way to bypass Fable 5's safeguards.
The government's worries stem from Anthropic's warning about Mythos model's ability to identify software vulnerabilities that could be exploited by hackers to compromise critical computer networks globally. In response to the ban, Anthropic had to take down its AI models immediately after their launch. OpenAI, Anthropic's competitor, has also restricted the release of its new AI model, GPT-5.6 Sol, at the request of the Trump administration, making it accessible only to approved customers for a limited time.
President Trump recently signed an executive order on AI oversight, establishing a process for the government to assess the national security risks of advanced AI systems before their public release. AI developers can voluntarily participate in this vetting process, which lasts up to 30 days. The framework for this oversight is still in development, but it aims to address concerns about the potential misuse of AI technology for malicious purposes.
