WhatsApp Introduces Usernames for Enhanced Privacy and Security
WhatsApp is set to introduce a new feature that allows users to add and chat with contacts using usernames instead of phone numbers. This move aims to enhance privacy by keeping your phone number hidden from those who are not in your contacts. Usernames can be reserved starting this week to secure a unique handle before the official launch later this year. The rollout of this feature will be gradual, with users being notified when it becomes available in their country.
To reserve a username, users can navigate to Settings > Account > Username in the latest version of WhatsApp. This feature enables individuals and organizations to claim their existing Instagram or Facebook handles to prevent impersonation on WhatsApp. Notably, usernames for well-known personalities like celebrities and politicians have already been reserved to avoid any confusion. If your name matches that of a public figure, you will need to choose an alternative handle.
It is important to note that you cannot search for contacts using their usernames on WhatsApp. Therefore, you must know the exact username of a new contact to initiate a conversation with them. This new feature aims to make communication on WhatsApp more convenient and secure for users.
