San Diego Man Admits to Giving Hallucinogenic Mushrooms to Children in Distribution Scheme

A man in San Diego County has confessed to giving his young children hallucinogenic mushrooms and involving them in a scheme to distribute the illegal fungi. Randal Vance, along with his wife and a friend, grew and distributed psilocybin mushrooms from two locations in San Diego County. Vance pleaded guilty to various charges related to the conspiracy, while his wife and friend have also pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing. He admitted to giving his 9 and 11-year-old sons capsules containing hallucinogenic mushrooms on a regular basis.

Psilocybin mushrooms are classified as a controlled substance that can induce altered states of consciousness and vivid sensory experiences. Vance's defense attorney argued that his client's statements about micro-dosing his children were exaggerated or dishonest. Despite Vance's actions, his children are reportedly doing well academically and emotionally, showing no negative effects from their exposure to illicit substances. Vance initially became interested in mushrooms as a potential treatment for Lyme disease and his wife's mental health issues.

In October 2024, police conducted a search at one of Vance's locations in Fallbrook, where they discovered a significant amount of mushrooms and growing materials. Another location in Bonsall yielded more mushrooms, psilocybin capsules, and firearms. Vance used websites to market the mushrooms and involved his wife and eldest son in selling the drugs to their friends. The plea agreement states that Vance and his co-conspirators deleted messages and shut down the websites to destroy evidence.

Vance is set to be sentenced in September. Despite the serious charges he faces, his children seem to be thriving, which is a relief considering the circumstances. It is crucial to prioritize the well-being of children and ensure they are not exposed to harmful substances or criminal activities.
