America at 250: Celebrating the People, Inventions, and Culture of the United States
As the United States commemorates its 250th anniversary, CBS News conducted a survey to gather opinions on what makes America unique. The overwhelming consensus is that the people of America are the most remarkable aspect of the country, surpassing its land, economy, and government. Respondents were asked to identify America's greatest invention, with freedom and democracy being the most frequently mentioned. Technology and innovation were also highlighted, with the light bulb, internet, automobile, telephone, and airplane being popular choices.
In terms of cultural contributions, Americans view movies and television as the country's standout achievements, followed by its culinary offerings. Burgers emerged as the top food choice, beating out barbecue, apple pie, and hot dogs. Seniors favored apple pie as the quintessential American dish, while pizza was more popular in the Northeast than in other regions.
Looking ahead to the "America 250" celebrations, just over half of Americans expressed some level of excitement, with a smaller percentage indicating high enthusiasm. Half of the respondents plan to display the American flag on the Fourth of July, with those more enthusiastic about America 250 being more likely to do so.
