Rise in Hate Crimes: Vandalism of Tesla with Swastika in NYC's Upper East Side Highlights Alarming Trend

A Tesla parked on NYC's Upper East Side was vandalized with a swastika carved onto its hood, and authorities suspect that the presence of an Israeli flag in the car's back seat may have incited the attack. The incident occurred on East 85th Street near First Avenue, with the victim discovering the hateful symbol the following morning. The NYPD has not made any arrests in connection with the vandalism.

This act of vandalism is part of a recent surge in hate crimes in New York City, with a string of incidents targeting religious centers, homes, and vehicles with swastikas and antisemitic messages. Last month, Congregation Machane Chodosh in Queens was defaced with a swastika spray-painted over a plaque commemorating the survivors of Kristallnacht, a historic antisemitic event in Nazi Germany.

Citywide hate crimes have increased by nearly 9% this year, with 265 reported incidents compared to 244 in 2025. Of these hate crimes, 152 specifically targeted Jewish victims or were motivated by antisemitism. The rise in hate crimes underscores the need for continued vigilance and efforts to combat discrimination and intolerance in the community.
