Zimbabwe's Senate Passes Constitutional Amendments Extending President's Term

Zimbabwe's Senate has recently passed constitutional amendments that would eliminate direct presidential elections, push back the next election, and prolong the term of the country's 83-year-old leader. President Emmerson Mnangagwa's approval is the final requirement for these amendments to take effect. The bill received 75 votes in favor, with only four senators opposing it. The changes would delay the elections from 2028 to 2030 and extend Mnangagwa's term by two years. Members from both the ruling party and the opposition supported the amendments.
