North Korea's Naval Expansion: Building Larger Vessels and Equipping with Nuclear Weapons

The leader of North Korea has announced plans to build two larger vessels each year, surpassing the size of the recently commissioned Choe Hon destroyer. This announcement was made during the commissioning ceremony of the Choe Hyon, a 5,000-ton class warship, in Nampo. Kim emphasized the importance of equipping the Navy with nuclear weapons to enhance the operational efficiency of the state's nuclear force.
North Korea has highlighted the Choe Hyon's advanced weaponry capabilities, with Kim conducting multiple inspections of similar vessels this year. The country plans to commission the destroyer Kang Kon for operations soon and launch 10,000-tonne strategic warships in the future. Kim's strategy includes building two surface ships annually, with a focus on higher-class vessels like the 10,000-tonne cruiser.
During a recent party plenary meeting, Kim expressed the need to strengthen defence capabilities in response to military modernization efforts by South Korea and the United States. He warned of the region being pushed towards a potential nuclear war due to these developments. North Korea remains committed to enhancing its naval capabilities and maintaining a strong military presence in the region.
