Empowering Dreams: Maria Contreras-Sweet's Journey to the American Dream

The American Dream holds a special place in the heart of Maria Contreras-Sweet, a former US Administrator of the Small Business Administration. Born in Mexico, Maria's grandmother instilled in her the power of saying "yes" and helping others. Moving to the US at a young age, Maria faced challenges but was determined to make a difference. She founded HOPE, an organization empowering Latina women in leadership roles across the country. Maria's journey led her to serve as California's Secretary of Education, start a bank, and eventually become a cabinet secretary under President Obama.
Maria's dedication to small businesses stems from their vital role in the economy and the opportunity they provide for individuals to thrive. She believes that supporting small businesses not only strengthens the middle class but also fosters democracy by creating leaders within communities. Reflecting on her grandmother's words, Maria sees her journey as a realization of the American dream—a testament to hard work, perseverance, and lifting others up along the way.
The American Dream Video Project, presented by the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream (MCAAD), shares inspiring stories like Maria's that highlight the pathways to opportunity. As part of America's 250th anniversary celebration, MCAAD offers interactive exhibits and narratives that showcase the diverse experiences of individuals pursuing their dreams.
