Challenges and Tactics in Battling the Lineage Logistics Cold Storage Warehouse Fire in Boyle Heights
Firefighters in Boyle Heights faced new challenges as a cold storage warehouse fire experienced a flare-up, intensifying smoke conditions in the area. The incident could last for several days, with firefighters limited to exterior operations due to dangerous conditions inside the building. Despite efforts to apply water from outside, the structure could not be ventilated, leading to significant smoke accumulation.
The fire at the Lineage Logistics cold storage facility intensified when flames broke through the roof, endangering the 75,000 pallets of frozen food stored inside. Firefighters discovered a pocket of fire in a freezer container, reigniting the blaze after it had been contained earlier. Helicopters were used for water drops over the building, a rare tactic due to the roof design and absence of firefighters inside.
Residents expressed concerns about the environmental and health impacts of the fire, but the shelter-in-place order was lifted, and no evacuations were in effect. A smoke respite shelter was available for affected residents. The fire may have started during work on solar panels by a third-party contractor, according to the building's tenant, Lineage. Authorities advised residents to keep windows closed and avoid using air conditioning until air quality improved, warning that extinguishing the fire could be a lengthy process.
