The study found that tech workers who used AI less than monthly had an 18% risk of being laid off, compared to a 6% risk for those who used it regularly. This trend was also observed in the broader workforce, with a 5% layoff risk for those who used AI less frequently, compared to a 3% risk for regular users. However, only 1% of recently laid-off workers attributed their job loss to AI or automation.
The disparity in layoff risk was most pronounced in the technology sector, where the risk for infrequent AI users was triple that of regular users. This pattern persisted even after accounting for factors like age, education, industry, and time since the layoff. The findings are based on a survey of over 23,000 U.S. workers, including 660 who had been laid off.
Despite the prevalence of headlines linking mass layoffs to AI, very few laid-off workers cited AI as the primary reason for their job loss. Instead, reasons such as restructuring, cost-cutting, or role elimination were more commonly mentioned.
